ExED strives to dramatically improve the quality of public education by creating access to K-12 schools with high student achievement in low-income neighborhoods through community-based charter schools. The long-range goal is to revolutionize public education in Southern California by demonstrating that high achieving public schools can be sustained in the inner city.
ORIGINS OF THE CHARTER SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT
When California policy makers passed The Charter Schools Act of 1992, they created the vehicle, but not the means, to create charter schools. While charter schools thrive because of flexibility and accountability, the process to open one is lengthy, difficult and often daunting. The non-profit organization ExED is a catalyst for taking the desire to create a charter school and assembling the many components needed to make the school real. Organizers of charter schools face three critical hurdles: 1) developing the school, 2) locating affordable facilities and 3) managing the various business functions once opened. ExED’s services in these areas allow charter schools to direct more of their resources to the classroom so that students can achieve their potential.
