60 Great Schools

September 2006
Test-score champion. Dance-based charter. Traditional academy. Los Angeles is full of possibilities.
The following list is by no means definitive--there are more than 60 great schools in Los Angeles County. Rather, it is a sample of schools--public and private--that represent different educational approaches and are noteworthy for reasons ranging from scholastic achievement to innovation. The information, including Academic Performance Index (API) test scores, is for the past school year. Many of these institutions have received California Distinguished School and National Blue Ribbon honors; generally we only mention recent awards. Annual tuition numbers may not include fees. We considered schools that have kindergartens and open admissions policies and did not focus on those that require religious instruction as part of the curriculum.

"Our school is very committed to a standard-based curriculum that's also creative," says Principal Susan Gurman. Language arts is a major focus because 90 percent of kindergartners are ESL learners.
